Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) is a kind of engineering plastics with excellent comprehensive performance, which is widely used in the fields of flue gas dedusting, electronic and electrical appliances, petrochemical industry, automobile and machine parts, corrosion resistant fabrics, etc. This is closely related to its excellent mechanical properties, high temperature durability, chemical resistance, flame retardancy and other characteristics. Due to the existence of a large number of benzene rings on the main chain of PPS, its products are poor in toughness, easy to break, low in impact resistance, and also have the shortcomings of unstable viscosity in the melting process, easy to be oxidized and cross-linked, and difficult to be processed. These have limited the use of PPS to a certain extent, so the research on the modification of polyphenylene sulfide is particularly important.

We say that the inorganic filler is related to the modification of PPS materials. The development of inorganic filler modified PPS is to reduce costs and expand the application scope of PPS on the basis of ensuring the material performance. However, after decades of research and development, the addition of inorganic filler not only achieves the goal of reducing costs, improving mechanical properties and processing properties, but also endows PPS with new properties, such as thermal conductivity, conductivity and magnetism. The researchers used calcium carbonate to fill the PPS material. According to the experimental results, adding calcium carbonate will limit the movement of the PPS chemical chain, so as to reduce the crystallization ability of the material. When the mass fraction of calcium carbonate is less than 3%, the material dispersion is relatively uniform, at this time, the calcium carbonate hinders the PPS material significantly. When the mass fraction of calcium carbonate is higher than 3%, the material chain spacing will become larger, and the chain activity will become easier.

Due to the superior performance of PPS, the PPS synthesis and modification industry has developed rapidly in recent years. Many products with commercial value have been developed and have broad application prospects. In the future, the research direction of PPS modification is to develop more kinds of inorganic fillers and fibers with new properties, compatibilizers and compatibilizing technologies, and further improve the processing technology to prepare high-performance PPS filled composites and co blends.
